Dragon Blade: The Beginning Review

You don't have to be Pixar or Dreamworks to put out an entertaining computer animated movie. My kids loved it. The plot is easy for them to follow and I enjoyed the "G" rated martial arts effects (no blood or guts - this is a family rated movie). You can see they put a lot of time and effort into this production. And this film beat Kung Fu Panda by three years as being the first computer animated martial art motion picture. I don't think you'd be disappointed. You can buy Cheap Dragon Blade: The Beginning online fast and easy, Shop Today!.

If everybody were as special as the gang that dwells beyond the Big Blue buzzer, life lessons like acceptance, acknowledging others' needs, and making sense of opposites would wiggle their way into our psyches so snugly packed in high spirits they'd be barely detectable. Special proves it, with "As Different as Day and Night" demonstrating that brilliance lies at both ends of a spectrum; "Bats Are People Too" clearing the cobwebs off Benny, a bat who's not all bad; and "The Yard Sale" shuffling everybody outdoors, where they work together to tag it and bag it for a worthy cause. As usual, the gentle giant of a head of household comes through with sniff-along invitations and heel-kickin' musical numbers. When hospitality toward kids 2 to 5 seems in short supply, hightail it on over. --Tammy La Gorce

Here's an event movie that holds up to being an event. This filmed version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, adapted from the wildly popular book by J.K. Rowling, stunningly brings to life Harry Potter's world of Hogwarts, the school for young witches and wizards. The greatest strength of the film comes from its faithfulness to the novel, and this new cinematic world is filled with all the details of Rowling's imagination, thanks to exuberant sets, elaborate costumes, clever makeup and visual effects, and a crème de la crème cast, including Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, and more. Especially fine is the interplay between Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his schoolmates Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), as well as his protector, the looming Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane). The second-half adventure--involving the titular sorcerer's stone--doesn't translate perfectly from page to screen, ultimately because of the film's fidelity to the novel; this is a case of making a movie for the book's fans, as opposed to a transcending film. Writer Steve Kloves and director Chris Columbus keep the spooks in check, making this a true family film, and with its resourceful hero wide-eyed and ready, one can't wait for Harry's return. Ages 8 and up. --Doug Thomas

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Special Widescreen Edition) Review

I am one that has never read the Harry Potter books, but really did enjoy this movie. I wouldn't say that it is amazing, but it does appeal to all ages. The story is really good, but the CGI used in the movie is a little dated. There are scenes when you can tell that it is computer animated because the characters look like something from a video game. Not really used to seeing a movie when they use CG for the actors and it is slowed down enough where you get a good look and are able to tell the actor fake. It just takes away from the movie a little. You can buy Cheap Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Special Widescreen Edition) online fast and easy, Shop Today!.

Roald Dahl - The Making Of Modern Children's Literature Sale

Buy Roald Dahl - The Making Of Modern Children's Literature. Everyone knows that Roald Dahl's stories for children James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG and Matilda are special. But the quality that makes them unique is difficult to define. Dahl appealed to the disgusting side of children's imaginations, and although critics cite his stories as dark , subversive and diseased , children world-wide continue to love Dahl's work. (Educationalists have failed to have his books banned).

This profile looks at the influences that made his vivid writings and magical tales so convincing. Family and friends describe his complicated, and very public, private life and read from his many children's books.

Top Gun [HD DVD]

Top Gun [HD DVD] Sale

Buy Top Gun [HD DVD]. Top Gun takes a look at the danger and excitement that awaits every pilot at the Navy's prestigious fighter weapons school. Tom Cruise is superb as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a daring young flyer who's out to become the best of the best. And Kelly McGillis sizzles as the civilian instructor who teaches Maverick a few things you can't learn in a classroom.

Special Price at Amazon Click to See Price

Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh

Top Gun [HD DVD] Review

Well, the dialogue is down right corny and the actual "in cockpit" footage isn't all that great given the fact that this is supposed to be about pilots and their machines, the fact of the matter is, if you loved Top Gun when it first took flight back in the 80's it's all the more reason to see this in HiDef. The sound track in any set up outside of plain stereo is great and the sounds of the jet engines swooshing by you from front to back and left to right and so on is just booming. I could do without the sausage fest of the volleyball scene but that was the hook for the female crowd. I could do with more flight scenes and fight footage but I didn't write the script. The videos of the songs are a nice inclusion, too. You can buy Cheap Top Gun [HD DVD] online fast and easy, Shop Today!.

Set against the backdrop of the Italian front during World War I, an American Army volunteer (Rock Hudson) meets a British nurse (Jennifer Jones) on the eve of the big offensive in the Alps and they fall passionately in love. Torn apart, then reunited, they escape to Switzerland to await the birth of their child - and the tragic conclusion to their once-in-a-lifetime romance. A Farewell to Arms Review

David O. Selznick production that is based on a novel by Ernest Hemingway, this is a story of the love between ambulance driver, Lieutenant Henry (Rock Hudson) and Nurse, Catherine Barkley (Jennifer Jones) during World War I Italy. the story is made complex by the interference of Major Rinaldi (Vittorio De Sica.)

Well I have to admit that I have read Hemmingway but not this book. I did however see the Gary Cooper movie first. However, it is a story about Love found - love lost - love found - love never lost.

This version seems a little fuller and a lot more colorful than the 1932 version. However, the story is also filled with slapstick comic relief and conversational filler tripe. This is still a tearjerker. It has been suggested that Jennifer was a tad old for the part of a 23-year-old nurse. I was so busy with the story that I did not really notice. As far as Rock, I thing he was thrown into lots of these movies on his hansom leading man reputation. Vittorio De Sica acted his part quite well; however, I keep seeing him as Cardinal Rinaldi in "The Shoes of the Fisherman" (1968.) See Dr. Emerich (Oscar Homolka) again in The Seven Year Itch (1955.)

Running Scared

Running Scared Sale

Buy Running Scared. Slick, fast-paced and brutally shocking, this gritty actioner will jolt your senses like nothing else you've ever experienced. Struggling mob hand Joey Gazelle (Paul Walker) finds his life turned inside-out when a "hot" weapon he's in charge of concealing goes missing. With two mafia families and a team of crooked cops watching his every move, Joey sets out on a chilling, bloody pursuit, maneuvering his way through a horrific web of creeps and criminals, praying he can retrieve the gun and make it home to his family -- alive.

Trying to explain the wildly accelerated plot of this non-stop action thriller would be like convincing Quentin Tarantino to retell the saga of The Sopranos in 15-minutes or less. Don't misunderstand, Running Scared wastes little time on the nuanced details that make the violent, narratively precise, and intricately characterized world of The Sopranos so stylish and compelling. But boy, does it have style to spare, not to mention plenty of violence, narrative, and a cast of characters that all engage in a heady battle for your attention. Paul Walker has the unenviable task of fleshing out the role of a low-level mob flunky who's assigned to get rid of a gun that was involved in a bloody drug deal gone bad. When he botches even that little job, it's not just his wife who gets mad at him. Creepily threatened kids, put-upon women who save the day, and an array of pimps, hookers, sleazy gangsters and dirty cops straight ouuta central casting are all part of the intricate jumble of the story (not to mention bullet-time close-ups and a nifty scene that imparts the inherent danger of hockey pucks in a whole new light). It's hard to believe this outlandish piece of ultraviolence came from writer/director Wayne Kramer, the same creative mind that gave us the smooth little caper flick The Cooler. Don't think about that too hard though. Considering the madcap rush of Running Scared's wicked fun and inspired lunacy, you won't have the time to anyway. --Ted Fry

Running Scared Review

`Running Scared' is one of those dark movies where the action does not stop from start `til end. An adrenaline rush that will satisfy all adrenaline junkies and leave you emotionally exhausted at the end.

If you think `Crank' is one top fast thriller ride, then you definitely have to check this one out. Running Scared makes `Crank' look like a walk in the park. Paul Walker's character is working for a top mod and after being part of an assassination his superior orders Joey Gazelle (Paul Walker) to get rid of the gun that holds as evidence of the shoot out. After it falls in the wrong hands it is up to Joey Gazelle to recover the item in order to avoid being killed for the slip-up. A nonstop action journey that this man will undergo in order to recover the evidence and save his life; the desperation that the main character feels will be transmitted to you throughout the movie, since it engages very well with its audience. To top things off a nice twisted ending for a great finale.

Definitely a must see. This movie will never get old.

When his son max blows out the candles on his fifth birthday he has just one wish that his dad will stop lying for 24 hours. When maxs wish comes true fletcher discovers that his mouth has suddenly become his biggest liability. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 02/14/2006 Starring: Jim Carrey Jennifer Tilly Run time: 87 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Tom Shadyac

Special Price at Amazon Click to See Price

Recovering from the box-office disappointment of The Cable Guy, Jim Carrey gave his fans what they wanted in this good-natured and frequently hilarious 1997 comedy. In a vehicle tailor-made for his verbal and physical antics, Carrey plays a lawyer whose penchant for prevarication is tested when his son makes a birthday wish that his father would tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth for 24 hours, so help him God! Without his daily defense of white lies, selfish fibs, and outright deception, the helpless lawyer finds himself blurting uncensored truths with total, and totally outrageous, candor. The script is clever enough to milk the premise for all it's worth, but it's Carrey's energy--particularly in a hilarious bathroom scene where he literally mugs himself to delay a trial--that keeps the movie going to its sappy happy ending. The supporting cast includes Jennifer Tilly, Cary Elwes, and Amanda Donohoe. --Jeff Shannon

Liar Liar Review

Directed by: Tom Shadyac
Starring: Jim Carrey
Running time: 86 min. PG13 - 1997

The movie "Liar Liar" is one of Jim Carrey's most underrated films, it was the first time he portrayed a normal character in a weird setting instead of a weird character in a normal setting. Carey's character is a lawyer who always seems to disappoint his son who wishes on his birthday that Carey couldn't tell a lie for 24 hours. This creates quite the comical dilemma for Carey who trying to win a big case for his firm. The story becomes very heartfelt and touching as Carey realizes what's truly important.

Zeus and Roxanne Sale

Buy Zeus and Roxanne. ZEUS IS A ROWDY LITTLE RUFFHOUSE OF A DOG, ROXANNE, A DELIGHTFULDOLPHIN. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE TWO COME TOGETHER AND THE EFFECT THEY HAVE ON THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM IS AN EXCITING ANDUNEXPECTED TALE OF FREEDOM, FRIENDSHIP AND LOVE.

Special Price at Amazon Click to See Price

Too bland for any kid over age 7, Zeus and Roxanne is one of those utterly formulaic family movies that is so harmless it could put even younger kids to sleep. It's really about a cute dog (Zeus) who develops a fun-filled friendship with a clever dolphin (Roxanne) along the tropical coasts of the Bahamas. Zeus's owner is a kid whose bachelor father (Steve Guttenberg) is trying to compose a rock opera, and Roxanne is being lovingly studied by a single marine biologist (Kathleen Quinlan) who's got two young daughters. In true Brady Bunch fashion, they all get together to form a family, but there's danger afoot when another scientist threatens to use Roxanne for unfriendly research. There's plenty of surf and sun to go with this save-the-dolphin sentiment, so Zeus and Roxanne score a few points for being good-natured and adorable. Whether any kid will watch it more than once is another matter entirely. --Jeff Shannon

Zeus and Roxanne Review

Terry Barnett (Steve Guttenberg) is a widower with a young son, 10-year-old Jordan (Miko Hughes), a rock opera trying to get written, and a scruffy sandy-colored dog illogically named Zeus. Mary Beth Dunhill (Kathleen Quinlan) is a marine biologist working for a small oceanographic institute on the Florida Gulf Coast, struggling to get grant funding, working to return a formerly captive dolphin named Roxanne to the wild, and trying to raise two daughters, 15-year-old Judith (Majandra Delfino) and 12-year-old Nora (Jessica Howell). When the Barnetts rent a cottage just across from the one the Dunhills are occupying and Zeus becomes fascinated with Roxanne on seeing her leaping and playing in the bay, it changes everyone's lives. Terry is immediately attracted to Mary Beth, but the crazy circumstances of their meeting seem to mitigate against anything serious. Then Zeus stows away abord Mary Beth's research boat and, to her astonishment, seems to initiate real interchange with Roxanne. With some manipulation by the kids, Terry and Mary Beth begin to date--but Terry isn't sure he's over his wife's death. It takes Zeus, once again, to bring things to their rightful conclusion. Humor, animals, beautiful scenery, and a nasty-nice villain (Arnold Vosloo as Mary Beth's former supervisor Claude Carver)--what more do you need? Kids will like them all, and adults will enjoy following the budding (but never overemphasized) romance. In a way, it isn't just a dog and a dolphin who are learning to communicate: it's animals and humans, a man and a woman, a boy and two girls. And, after all, communication is something everybody has to master.

Born to Be Bad Review

I don't want to be too extensive. I only want to tell you this short (61 minutes of running time) Pre-Code, is a goody-goody, with Cary Grant, and especially Loretta Young, who is great in it...she looks ravishing, great gowns, slim-fitted, beautiful face-eyes, fresh beauty, great spunk.

I cannot understand why (I've read it) Loretta was "stereotyped" and "dismissed", mainly in the 1930's as being a so-so or bad actress, and being only a "clotheshorse"...untrue...she's radiantly good (Well BAD) (chuckles) here.

It's difficult to think of this LORETTA...when one thinks of the 1940's Loretta in "The Farmer's Daughter"....or her other teaming with Cary Grant, the excellent & cute & sentimental "The Bishop's Wife"...a completely different stuff.

I wanna watch more early '30s Loretta, not only her virginal-good characters (like "Zoo in Budapest" (I'd "kill" to see this one) or "The Crusades" (here she's mostly "decorative" IMHO)....but stuff like "Midnight Mary" (I've read it's TOP) "Employee's Entrance", "Taxi". "The Hatchet Man".....

The quality of the DVD is pretty good.

Pre-Code lovers watch it! You can buy Cheap Born to Be Bad online fast and easy, Shop Today!.

Preschoolers will be thoroughly entertained as Elmo and Professor Grover teach a real preschool class about the alphabet, letter names, and letter sounds in this first DVD in the Sesame Street: Preschool Is Cool series. The format is classic Sesame Street: a mix of music, puppetry, animation, and live action that translates into 50 minutes of pure fun and learning. Professor Grover has a very specific lesson plan for teaching his preschool class about the alphabet, and the preparation entails finding something that starts with every letter of the alphabet. The professor has some trouble remembering the order of the letters and finding an item for each letter, but luckily his assistant Elmo comes to the rescue. Interspersed throughout Grover and Elmo's lesson are several renditions of the alphabet song in a variety of styles, plus a handful of Sesame Street vignettes, including Telly's membership in the Letter of the Month Club, his stint as a contestant on the "Hurry Up, You're Running Out of Time Show," a letter circus, and Dr. Grover playing the role of an alphabet specialist in the hit show "A's Anatomy." The classic "African Alphabet" music video is included as a bonus feature. Developing early reading skills is all about fun when the Sesame Street gang is involved! (Ages 2 to 5) --Tami Horiuchi

Sesame Street: Preschool Is Cool! ABCs with Elmo Review

My toddler loves this DVD. She already knows her alphabets so his was just for fun. Be mindful that Grover says the alphabet the wrong way a few times and the way he says it is quite catchy. My toddler likes to say it the way grover says it now, but she does know the difference. So my advice is make sure your kid knows the correct way of saying the alphabet before watching it. Ice Age [Blu-ray] Sale

Buy Ice Age [Blu-ray]. They came... they thawed... they conquered the hearts of audiences everywhere in the coolest animated adventure of all time! Heading south to avoid the bad case of global frostbite, a group of migrating misfit creatures embark on a hilarious quest to reunite a human baby with his tribe. Featuring an all-star voice cast, including Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary, ICE AGE is "a pure delight" (New York Daily News) for all ages!

Special Price at Amazon Click to See Price

Just as A Bug's Life was a computer-animated comedy inspired by Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai, the funny and often enthralling Ice Age is a digital re-imagining of the Western Three Godfathers. The heroes of this unofficial remake (set 20,000 years ago, during the titular Paleolithic era) are a taciturn mastodon named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano), an annoying sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), and a duplicitous saber-toothed tiger, Diego (Denis Leary). The unlikely team encounters a dying, human mother who relinquishes her chirpy toddler to the care of these critters. Hoping, against all odds, to return the little guy to his migrating tribe, Manfred and his associates need to establish trust among themselves, not an easy thing in a harsh world of predators, prey, and pushy glaciers. Audiences that have become accustomed to the rounded, polished, storybook look of Pixar's house brand of computer animation (Monsters, Inc.) will find the blunt edges and chilly brilliance of Ice Age--evoking the harsh, dangerous environment of a frozen world--a wholly different, and equally pleasing, trip. Recommended for ages 4 and up. --Tom Keogh

Ice Age [Blu-ray] Review

Friendship, loyalty...danger, adventure...love, family; these are all just some of the many themes presented in delightful form in this crowd pleasing animated feature staring some prehistoric creatures.

With the vocal talents of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo (perfectly cast as the awkward sloth), Denis Leary and minor moments with Jack Black and Cedric the Entertainer, `Ice Age' has the comedic talent to back up its premise. The film tells the story of a lonely mammoth named Manfred. With the rest of civilization (or animal-kind) heading south, Manfred finds himself working against nature (as is his nature) until he meets an obnoxious creature named Sid who, through a series of events, changes Manfred's course. They soon encounter a dying human mother who has just been attached (along with her village) by some dastardly saber-toothed tigers. Before she expires, this human hands off her child to the unlikely pair who then make it their goal to return the child to his tribe. Before they can make any progress, they are accosted by Diego, one of the saber-toothed tigers. Scheming to get the child for himself (and his pack) he pretends to have the child's best interest at heart, and accompanies Manfred and Sid on their journey to find the humans.

That's pretty much the movie in a nutshell.

What I loved so much about this film is that it doesn't beat you over with sentiment and poignancy, but it subtly wraps those important themes around endless scenes of warm hearted comedy. The film is just really, really funny. The sequences never seem to be lacking, whether it be physical comedy or witty intellect or even slapstick child-like comedy. The film perfectly fuses the three variations of comedic delivery into a nicely balanced feature film.

And who doesn't think that Scrat is like the best animated character of all time?

In the end I am more than pleased with this film. It is not the best animated film of all time, but it deserves more respect than I think it garners. It is nice to see that more animated films are carrying weightier messages and delivering strongly, and I applaud Pixar for taking the lead in adding depth to a genre that is all too often disregarded as `childsplay' (I am at fault of this very act of blasphemy in the past), but we don't want to forget that the heart of the animated feature lies in the smile plastered on our son or daughter's face, and it is films like `Ice Age' that bring those smiles in spades. Max & Ruby - Party Time with Max & Ruby Review

I bought this DVD for my daughters 4th birthday and she loves it! She watches it over and over again. For some reason Max & Ruby really appeals to her at this age. I have to admit that the stories are really good at teaching manners and behavior and I also enjoy listening to the program as it plays for her. The only "bad" thing I would say is that at times my daughter tries to emulate Max who is the "bad" little brother in the program, but his antics are harmless. Wish Upon a Star Review

I loved this as a kid and now have it on DVD. It's one of the best Disney Channel original movies out there. I wish more of them were on DVD but very few of the older ones are.

The movie is about two sisters who switch bodies when one wishes on a star. It is kind of like the old version of "Freaky Friday" before Lindsay Lohan ruined that movie. I like it a lot. You can buy Cheap Wish Upon a Star online fast and easy, Shop Today!.

I am a school counselor and show this to all my Kindergarten-2nd Grade classes. It is great!!! It is a good review of good manners and the kids LOVE that it is a game show. Keeps all the kids attention. I highly recommend for home or school. It came in a soft cover though. A hard case would have been nice (but for the small price I can't really complain about that). Super Mario Bros: Mario of the Deep Review

My 7 year old step son often talked about Mario from Mario party game we bought. So when we were at a local Red Box (movie rental) I got one for him to watch. He loved it and it had some really good life lessons and stories. I was very surprised. So I wanted to buy one for him. As we do not let him watch a lot of TV we wanted to offer him some wholesome TV viewing. We got this one for long road trips in the truck. He really liked it. We like it to sense we did have to worry about answering questions about some of the content he has watched before in other children's cartoons that we did not relative were so edgy. Before this video Jabber Jaws was the main one he watched all of the time. You can buy Cheap Super Mario Bros: Mario of the Deep online fast and easy, Shop Today!.

Otto Preminger's Daisy Kenyon is an unsung beauty from Hollywood's golden age, a remarkably good and intelligent movie that's all the more gratifying because it could so easily have come out formulaic and sappy. In 1947 it was regarded (and implicitly shrugged off) as a "women's picture" or, more specifically, a "Joan Crawford picture." But there's more going on here. This was shortly after the Oscar for Mildred Pierce revived the actress's career, and the nature of a Crawford picture was changing since she had entered her (gasp) 40s. New York careerwoman Daisy (a magazine illustrator) is trying to break off her longtime affair with a high-profile lawyer and family man (Dana Andrews), and tentatively beginning a relationship with an attractive WWII veteran and widower (Henry Fonda). The men's roles are as important as Crawford's, and neither man is entirely what he first seems--Andrews a self-centered manipulator in all arenas, Fonda a poetic New Englander who used to design boats. Enough ambivalence, wounded psyches, and intimate violence surface to make the movie a kissing cousin to film noir... albeit a variation of noir in which no gun is pulled. Noir also leaks in through the gorgeous Fox craftsmanship. Leon Shamroy's lustrous lighting paints the characters and their studio-made, persuasively three-dimensional environs with insinuating shadow, while still serving director Preminger's penchant for fluid camerawork and mise-en-scène that doesn't dictate our attitudes toward the characters. The production is a model of Hollywood professionalism at every level, and the three star performances are each atypical and complex, with Crawford more restrained and thoughtful than we're accustomed to seeing her. And speaking of model performances, plan to rewatch the film while listening to the commentary by Foster Hirsch, author of the excellent critical biography, Otto Preminger: The Man Who Would Be King; Hirsch is especially sharp on Preminger's stylistic choices and the underappreciated Dana Andrews. --Richard T. Jameson

Daisy Kenyon (Fox Film Noir) Review

Daisy Kenyon (Joan Crawford) is a successful, single commercial artist living in Manhattan with a roommate, Mary (Martha Stewart), and carrying on an affair with married bigshot lawyer Dan O'Meara (Dana Andrews) while also being romanced by traumatized war veteran Peter Lapham (Henry Fonda). When Dan early on can't commit to calling off his marriage to his unhappy wife Lucille (Ruth Warrick), Daisy in frustration decides to marry Peter, though both she and Peter realize that she's not really in love with him. They move out to Cape Cod, but Dan is having problems at home - Lucille finds out and wants to divorce him, but she's also taking out her frustrations on their teenage daughters, which frightens and saddens Dan, and he's in the midst of a difficult case. Meanwhile Peter seems ready to just give Daisy up, should she give the word...

Otto Preminger's 1947 black-and-white, shadowy and sharp-angled picture is shot like a film noir, at times feels like it's heading into noir territory - we wonder at first if Fonda's unstable, obsessive character will take the road of violence in his passion, and Lucille O'Mara is also struggling with some mental issues and seems capable of taking the dark path - but interestingly, and refreshingly, the film never does more than strongly hint of these possibilities, instead at every point taking on the difficult and adult challenges posed by these complex human interactions. All of the characters come off as believable and sympathetic - even the abusive Lucille clearly is taking out her frustrations the only way she feels she can, and apparent heel Dan turns out to be much more vulnerable and torn apart than his buddy-buddy joking (he calls everybody "sugarplum" or "honeybunch") would at first indicate. Peter shows unexpected strengths, and Daisy throughout struggles not so much between the two men, as between either man and "freedom". But what kind of freedom? The film doesn't choose to make an overtly feminist statement and have her tell both men to get lost in the end; at first I hoped it would - instead it takes an arguably more difficult tack in showing us subtly a very different way in which one of the men can win her heart...

I have to say I was completely blown away by this - it's easily my favorite Preminger film to this point, and all three stars are as good as I've seen them. Fonda has the showiest role in some ways but he neither over- or under-plays it, there's an edge of danger and madness but throughout we see a man struggling for control - and nearly always maintaining it. Andrews and Crawford are playing roles more typical for them but both seem totally committed and seem to get that this is much closer to a real slice of life than the more melodramatic noir roles that they were associated with for the most part at the time. I don't know that Crawford is any better here than in "Mildred Pierce" but the film is pitched at a lower volume and she has more of a chance to be "normal". As much as the acting and Preminger's careful and subtle direction - relatively swift pacing within the scenes and a lot of noirish angles and lighting that keep the viewer on his toes throughout, building a suspense that is, in the end, nothing more or less than "real life" suspense - the screenplay by David Hertz (based on a recent bestselling novel by Elizabeth Janeway) doesn't have a lot of flaws either. Even some of the "noirish" bits of dialogue, like Dan's pet names for everybody and Peter's sometimes abrupt and cold, sarcastic cuttting comment, seem to come entirely out of the characters and never ring false.

I can think of few other competitors from this period that "Daisy Kenyon" has, as a mature and serious treatment of marriage and infedility in the American cinema; Ida Lupino's "The Bigamist" is one, but it is marred by a rather gutless and moralizing ending - no such problem exists for this masterpiece. Whether one wants to call it "noir" or not (I wouldn't, in the final analysis), it's certainly one of the great American films of the immediate postwar years and shocklingly underseen and undervalued in my opinion.

This Fox disc is as nicely put together as the other examples I've seen in this series, with a couple of brief docs on Preminger and on the making of this film - no surprise that they go on a bit about Crawford's age though if anything Fonda is the actor who can most readily be seen as "too old" for his part. Anyway it's hard to imagine anybody but Andrews in his role, and Crawford could have MAYBE been replaced by Susan Hayward, but probably no one else. I haven't listened to the commentary track yet.

The third film in the Air Buddies series, itself a spin-off of the Air Bud series, Space Buddies features five golden retriever puppies who have a knack for getting into mischief. While the Buddies separated at the end of Air Buddies and currently live with different families, their kid owners all go to the same school and live in the same town. When the kids take a field trip to see the launch of a real space shuttle, excitement runs high and Buddha quickly gets his brothers and sister together to sneak onto the school bus and join in the fun. The dogs get the adventure of a lifetime when they tour the shuttle at the wrong time and inadvertently get launched into space on a trip to the moon. All is not as it should be in mission control, and saboteur Mr. Finkle (Kevin Weisman) may just get the whole mission scrapped--Buddies and all. Mission control's Slats (Lochlyn Monroe), remote pilot Astro (Ali Hillis), spaceship designer Pi (Bill Fagerbakke), and his pet ferret Gravity try their best to save the shuttle and the Buddies, but the success of their mission hinges on help from crazy Russian cosmonaut Yuri (Diedrich Bader) and his cosmodog Spudnick. Voice talent includes Jason Earles as Spudnick, a Russian bull terrier with a decidedly strange accent, and Josh Flitter, Liliana Mummy, Nico Ghisi, Skyler Gisondo, and Henry Hodges as the Buddies. Blu-ray bonus features include a pop-up "Buddy Facts" option that runs the length of the movie, an interactive "Buddy Finder" game where viewers search for specific scenes as they watch the movie, and B-Disney Live capability. Other bonus features include a 13-minute making of featurette that includes some history about space travel and is narrated by the Buddies, bloopers, and Alyson Stoner's "Dancing in the Moonlight" music video. An adventure story with a nice message about family and teamwork, children ages 3 to 10 will enjoy Space Buddies with its cute talking puppies and not-too-scary space travel, but those seeking believability will not be impressed. --Tami Horiuchi
