Ridley Scott puts on his "sweeping saga" gameface again, this time not for the sci-fi vistas of Blade Runner or the ancient world of Gladiator but for an urban epic. American Gangster gives the story of Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), a real-life Harlem crime lord who built an empire on Southeast Asian heroin in the 1970s. Running parallel to Lucas's somewhat standard story is the investigation led by a persistent New Jersey cop, Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe). Roberts is a more interesting character than Lucas--too honest for his own good, unlucky in his personal life--and this kind of character, easily patronized by others, fits Crowe like a polyester shirt. Scott's tendency to hit his points square on the noggin is much in evidence here, including the typecasting of the supporting roles and the predictable Serpico atmosphere of the whole thing. (And speaking of supporting actors, the film needs more Chiwetel Ejiofor, whose role as a Lucas sidekick feels cut down.) It succeeds as a kind of chewy entertainment, fueled by the presence of two big stars working their muscles. Both Washington and Crowe look pretty brawny here. --Robert Horton

This is yet another ultimate movie from Ridley Scott, Denzel Washington, and Russell Crowe. This is not just a gangster flick, but, like The Godfather & Heat, is also a psychological drama. It tells the story of Frank Lucas, an African-American man who becomes a #1 drug importer in 60's Harlem. Richie Roberts is the cop who's willing to bring Lucas and his tainted business down. Seems like a simple story, but the film itself is far more complex. There is more story than action (not to say it is bad, but it really stands out with other awe-inspiring motion pictures). Ridley Scott simply knows how to make a great film, and this is one of his greatest. The performances here are also memorable. Washington, Crowe, Brolin, Gooding Jr., Nadal, Dee, Common, and T.I. give their roles their all, and they do it almost flawlessly. I'm surprised Washington wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. And the costumes and sets are just ravishing! It really feels like you're back in the late 60's, where you're anticipating the most intense boxing night in history.

It's not as great as other gangster/cop flicks, but it's great on its own level. Grade: A

It's hard not to get sucked in when this one pops up on the TV. Just go with the flow and enjoy. There are a lot worse out there.

I gave four stars because I think the movie itself deserves five, but this DVD version only deserves three. This is a great classic for all the reasons mentioned in other reviews - Great performances, excellent script, and the engrossing telling of a many-faceted historical story in a coherent manner. This DVD version has its problems, however. On the plus side, I like it because the subtitles are below the actual film, thus not impacting the movie itself. On a TV, this means that you need to use the clearer (but smaller) 4/3 aspect instead of "zooming" or using "full screen" or you miss the sub-titles. This may bother some, but I found it an advantage. On the negative side, at times I found the picture too dark to clearly see what was going on. Also, there were no real special features except theatrical trailers. With such a big, detailed historical film, this is a big disappointment, as more background on both the events and the making of the film would be very helpful. I will probably eventually "trade up" to blu-ray.

Definately a good adaptation of the Crime Syndicate...... a bit off kilter however - a bit of research could've lined things up with the comics better -

I'm guessing this is supposed to take place in the modern DC era... well, for one thing, in the DC Multiverse, 'Earth Prime' doesn't hold together the copies of earth (Earth Prime is the home to the evil Superboy), it's 'New Earth/Earth-0'that serves that function - which is the universe that most of the DC Comics take place....How much effort (ie looking thru 52, dc's 'multiverse wiki', or at wikipedia) would it have taken to get that point right?

Anyhow, the story was definately action packed and although Manhunter's Romantic Encounter seemed a bit rushed, it was somewhat believable.

The characters were definately interesting and Owlman was a total psychopath.....would have liked to see more suprise by the characters at meeting versions of themselves that were polar opposites, throwing some mystery in..

Other than that, a great story.

The Big Town Customer Review


The luscious Diane Lane was the reason I rented this movie (and would buy it as well, should it become available). I was on my Diane Lane binge when I saw this, along with Lady Beware, Priceless Beauty, The Outsiders and Rumble Fish. What can I say? I missed out on her movies as an adolescent. Seeing her in The Perfect Storm inspired me to seek out her earlier work.
The Big Town stands out as one of the better movies she was in, with an entertaining plot of a dice hustler played well by Matt Dillon. It seems they enjoyed acting together as well, having both been in Coppolla's Rumble Fish and The Outsiders.
There are a great collection of other character actors in this film as well, including Bruce Dern, Tommy Lee Jones and Tom Skerrit. Suzy Amis is sympathetic as Dillon's other love interest, but she doesn't hold a candle to the sex kitten Lane.

During his Twentieth Century Fox contract years, Gregory Peck looked to veteran director Henry King as something of a father figure and gave two of his best performances--in Twelve O'Clock High (1949) and The Gunfighter (1950)--for him. The Bravados (1958) isn't in that league, but it's a surprisingly tough film from the flabby CinemaScope years when the studio, director, and star all seemed to be floundering.

Peck plays Jim Douglass, a dark, haunted man who rides into a Southwest border town on the eve of a hanging. The bad men set for the drop (Stephen Boyd, Albert Salmi, Lee Van Cleef, Henry Silva) are the same ones he's been pursuing for the rape and murder of his wife. Douglass isn't happy about leaving it to the law to carry out his vengeance--and so there's a certain bleak satisfaction when the quartet busts out of jail, and he becomes the best hope for hunting them down.

Perversity wasn't King's long suit, so Philip Yordan's screenplay about a hero turning more sinister than the outlaws he's chasing never acquires the demonic power or ironic flair that an Anthony Mann, Fritz Lang, or Robert Aldrich might have lent it. Yet the very foursquareness of King's style and approach--and Peck's earnest efforts to fight through his accustomed stolidity to hit the necessary notes of desperation and finally shame--make for a fascination all their own. Joan Collins hovers handsomely on the periphery as an old friend ready to redeem Douglass, and Joe (Curly Joe-to-be) De Rita makes an uncredited appearance as the hangman. --Richard T. Jameson


The Bravados Customer Review



This film deals pretty openly with subjects that were still sort of taboo in 1958 -- rape and revenge killings.
Briefly, the plot revolves around Peck's Jim Douglass role. He's a rancher who has been dogedly hunting down four very bad men who could've raped and killed his wife. He finds them in jail 100 miles away from his ranch ... Not to give too much away, but the movie turns into a 90 minute chase and morality play. Great acting from Peck, Stephen Boyd, Henry Silva, Lee Van Cleef and Albert Salmi (who was the "bad guy" in more 60s and 70s tv shows than are probably listed online).
What strikes me most of all, is that from looking at this film, you can see it clearly had an influence on Sergio Leone almost a decade later when he made his Western triology starring Clint Eastwood.
There's the lone gunman against the world theme, along with revenge killing (not really done all that much in westerns before) and almost directly taken from The Bravados is the watch-with-a-picture. Peck holds out a watch with a picture of his dead wife to, Lee Van Cleef (and the rest of the bad guys) as a sort of guilt weapon. In 1965's "For a Few Dollars More" Van Cleef plays very much the same type of role as Colonel Mortimer having chased a man who performed almost the same act on his family.
This film gets an A for production and script. It's a little hokey at the end with Peck talking to a priest, but at least the acting and scenery are interesting.
It's a good film. Well worth a Saturday afternoon viewing.

This is a great movie. I was afraid when I watched it with my daughter that, though I loved it when I was younger, I would find it to be rather disappointing now (as has been the case with many "great" things I remember from my childhood)...not the case at all. I would be glad to watch it many more times again now.

BE AWARE, if you are tempted to bounce over and buy the cheaper 2002 DVD version of this same movie, that it has no widescreen option, and will only play "formatted to fit your screen". If you prefer widescreen stick with this 2009 DVD version.

For some reason they prefer Animal Alphabet - maybe because we had that one first. Both boys are really into animals right now. We read a lot of books and play games that are based on animals. For better or worse, David Mamet's hit play Sexual Perversity in Chicago is watered down into this romantic comedy about a couple (played by Rob Lowe and Demi Moore) who get together and then fall apart due to Lowe's character's inability to commit. Jim Belushi is on hand as the gratuitously swinish best friend who looks at women as meat, and Elizabeth Perkins is entertainingly arch as Moore's gal pal and Belushi's nemesis. There's nothing about this 1986 film by Edward Zwick (cocreator of TV's thirtysomething and director of Glory and Courage Under Fire) that is at all reminiscent of Mamet, but that doesn't make it bad or dull. While one can feel the script straining to fill in gaps where chunks of the original play have disappeared, Zwick often successfully tells the story without words at all, relying on the actors to convey pure emotion. Lowe is good, and the then-willowy Moore's understated performance reminds one of the actress she might have been before she became a spectacle. --Tom Keogh

Most people didn't mind Gwyneth Paltrow's English accent in this charming, 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel (which also inspired Clueless). But even if it doesn't sound quite right to you, there are plenty of authentic and wonderful Brit thespians in this film by screenwriter-turned-director Douglas McGrath (co-author of Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway), including Juliet Stevenson (Truly Madly Deeply), Alan Cumming (Buddy), Phyllida Law (Much Ado About Nothing), Ewan McGregor (the Scots star of Trainspotting), and Sophie Thompson, outstanding and finally heartbreaking as the chattering Miss Bates. Paltrow plays Austen's benign busybody, Emma Woodhouse--so busy trying to arrange the lives of others that she is sidestepping her own. McGrath brings a kind of pretty and light touch to the production, his best move the wise delegation of creative authority to the actors themselves. --Tom Keogh

I loved this movie It is beautifully filmed, the costumes and scenery are lovely to look at and make it believable coming from it's time period. I am a huge Jane Austen fan and am trying to watch every version of all of her books. This is the only version of Emma that I've seen so far. The movie is very funny and generally quite light as opposed to Sense and Sensibility or Mansfield Park - however that doesn't take away from the character development or the teaching of good morals and the satisfaction of a beautiful ending to the story which only occurs after Emma has learned the lessons she desperately needs to learn. I loved the humor - it is a wonderful "girl" movie with laughs and tears and of course beautiful language with nothing objectionable...It is the kind of movie that gives you the escape that you need into a world that is believable on some level but not real enough to be depressing. My only objection is that the DVD has no bonus materials - I would've loved to hear director and actor comments during the film as is often done and or a section on how the movie was made. After seeing several of these in other movies - it brings the movie alive in another way. Well worth watching.

Disney has done it once again. I absolutely love this movie. The characters, the atmosphere, and the music were just fantastic. My heart has always been fond of "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin", but now I have room for "The Princess and The Frog. Bravo Disney for making another classic that will be enjoyed for many years to come. I will definitely pre-order this movie and add it to my blu-ray collection.
